Our two day Yellowstone
tour leaves Park City at about 7 a.m., and Salt Lake at about 7.30
a.m. We can pick you up either in Park City, or at a downtown Salt
Lake hotel.
Our route takes us
through northern Utah, into Idaho, before entering Montana. The drive
is a picturesque one, and we'll stop occasionally to take pictures and
to stretch our legs. A sack lunch is provided. |

There is so much to see,
and not that much time on a two day tour, so we need to maximize your
enjoyment. After entering Yellowstone, we'll leave Montana and travel
into Wyoming.
Please note that there
is always road construction in Yellowstone, and, depending on which
roads are closed, and where the delays are, our route and schedule may
change without notice.
We'll make for the
Lower Geyser Basin, and check out Fountain Paint Pots, amongst other
areas of interest. Along the way, with any luck, we may see elk,
bison, deer and Trumpeter Swans.
One of the beauties of
Yellowstone is that there is such a wide variety of sights to be
seen. You may come across a herd of bison creating a traffic jam, or
a big old elk with a towering rack, or a lone geyser erupting just as
you approach it.

Rest of the day |
Our next stop is the
Upper Geyser Basin and Old Faithful, the most famous geyser in the
world. There is a lot to see and do here, and you can take a very
interesting hike around the various geysers in the basin. A highlight
is watching Old Faithful erupting.
Amongst the geysers
that are worth seeing is Grand Geyser, the tallest predictable geyser
in the world. Old Faithful Inn, a magnificent old structure, is
located in the area, and you can relax there with a cup of coffee, or
even have a meal while the others are taking in the action outside.
From Old Faithful
we'll go to West Thumb, and the shores of Lake Yellowstone. On the
way we'll cross the continental divide twice. Yellowstone Lake in an
unbelievable blue color, with geysers and hot springs on the shores.
There are almost always elk in the area.
There is time to take
in one more major attraction today, and we'll follow the shore of Lake
Yellowstone, past Fishing Bridge, to Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.
This spectacular gorge, with the Yellowstone River cascading over a
powerful waterfall and through a deep canyon, is not as well known as
the park's geysers, but it is equally spectacular.
It's time to return to
West Yellowstone and we'll take a shortcut across the middle of the
figure of eight that makes up the Yellowstone road system. |

About six to seven hours |
This will be a full and
fun day, with much to see and do. We'll head out of West Yellowstone
towards Madison Junction, where the Madison, Gibbon and Firehole
Rivers meet. Turning left (north) we'll make for Norris Geyser
Basin.
Although it is not as
well known as some of Yellowstone's other hot spots, it has some
fascinating thermal sights. Norris is the hottest and most changeable
geyser basin in Yellowstone, and it is home to Steamboat Geyser, the
world's tallest active geyser, which can erupt to more than 300 feet
high. The two main areas at Norris are Back Basin and Porcelain
Basin. We'll stroll around and take pictures.
The next stop is
Mammoth Hot Springs, headquarters of the park, and home to a
fascinating array of weird rock shapes, bright colors and sizzling hot
springs. Elk are generally plentiful in this area, wandering around
the old park buildings, and, if you're lucky, you might even see a
whole herd. A sack lunch is provided today.
From Mammoth we'll
take a leisurely drive back to West Yellowstone, stopping to take in
anything that may be of interest. |
